As an Elk Grove native, I am embarrassed by the various segments that showed Levin smoking. What a “role model, eh? This is simply disgusting. and it probably contributed to his meltdown.

My wife and I ardent golf fans and we too found his smoking disgusting. The commericals say “These Guys Are Good”. We also started rooting for the other guys after seeing his chain smokeing on national TV. Not a very good role model for the young folks. Seems the PGA would have,or institute, a policy regarding this.

Thanks for your comments Nancy. Part of the reason I wrote this was until I saw him I assumed the PGA Tour had already done something about this, and I was astonuishyed to find out that it wasn’t so. But without moralizing, my concern is for Levin and his image and well-being. There are simply too many people who will be eternally put off by his actions. He needs to rethink how he is perceived by the public.

I couldn’t agree more. I had never heard of Spencer Levin until today while watching the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The first image I saw of him was hitting a ball, and then smoking. SMOKING in front of the TV cameras and the world!! ?? !! I was disgusted.
When I am playing golf, I hate seeing cigarettes thrown on the lovely, pristeen greens and fairways. And if one of the pros is setting this example, what are all the other golfers in the world going to do? I feel sorry for the people who have to play with him on the tour. He’s setting a terrible example for young golfers…and for golf in general !!! Why doesn’t the PGA do something about this?

It could be that Levin’s smoking habit is directly correlated to his position on the leaderboard…… but I doubt it. I’ll bet it’s just that when he is on the leaderboard is the only time we SEE him smoking. His ‘people’ really should tell him to clean up this act.

After seeing Spencer on TV at the Waste Management on Feb. 4th on the 18th fairway smoking and spitting, he is going to lose may fans. What kind of message is he sending to the young comers? Tell him to quit or he’ll wind up like John Daly, a slob with talent!

As always, entertaining and I agree with about 90% of what you propose. I think you have a pretty safe chance of Q2 weather not being as bad in ’12 as it was in ’11 but, as you saw (bad pun)in the equipment category performance bet we made in advance of the 2010 season, we are the accountability police and the fact checkers in this industry on anything that touches our areas of expertise. Keep prognositicating, my experience shows that people who won’t take a stand on anything generally aren’t worth keeping company with.

While I agree that in some ways this could make Tiger look more sympathetic, I seriously doubt a former employee would throw himself on the racially-insensitive pile merely for the purposes of making his former employer who he seems to genuinely now hate look better. And if he did, well then he deserves to have stories like this written about him.

This makes Tiger more sympathetic. It could work to his advantage. Conspiracy theorists would claim they staged the whole thing to make Tiger the good guy.
